Sewer or septic? It depends on where you are

Much of Dothan is on city sewer. Dothan Utilities, the city's electric, water and wastewater utility, reports more than 500 miles of sewer pipe, more than 50 pumping stations and three treatment plants serving over 29,000 customer buildings. Past the reach of those lines, septic takes over: rural roads toward Wicksburg on Highway 103, the country around Rehobeth just southwest of town, small towns like Taylor, Kinsey, Ashford, Gordon and Cowarts, and farm and timber land across Houston, Henry, Dale, Geneva and Coffee counties. Not sure which you have? If your utility bill carries a sewer charge, you are on sewer. If it does not, or you are on a well, you almost certainly have a septic tank.

Who handles septic permits here

For most of the Dothan area, permits for new systems and repairs come from the environmental office of the Houston County Health Department on East Cottonwood Road, behind the Houston County Farm Center and one block east of Ross Clark Circle. Small parts of Dothan reach into Dale and Henry counties, and nearby towns fall under the Dale (Ozark), Henry (Abbeville), Coffee (Enterprise) and Geneva (Hartford) county health departments, so the county line, not the mailing address, decides which office you deal with. Our guide to septic permits in Houston County and the Wiregrass lays out the steps and the offices.

Wiregrass soil, rain and storms

The Dothan soil series, one of the most widespread soils of the southeastern Coastal Plain, was first established in Houston County in 1965. It drains well near the surface, but starting roughly two to five feet down it holds plinthite, a mottled layer where water moves more slowly. Other common Wiregrass soils, such as Fuquay, have a thick sandy top layer. That mix is why the soil evaluation decides what kind of system a lot can have, and why two lots on the same road can need different systems.

Weather matters too. August is usually Dothan's wettest month, and big single storms happen: on March 18, 2022, city rain gauges recorded roughly 4 to nearly 7 inches in about four hours. Hurricane Michael's eye passed near Gordon in October 2018, and Houston County had the most Alabama Power outages in the state that morning, about 10,000 customers. Systems with pumps or aerobic units stop moving water when the power is out. A tank that is overdue for pumping is far more likely to cause trouble when storms hit, so regular pumping matters.

  2. Get connected. We connect you with an independent, licensed local septic provider who serves your town.

  4. You decide. There is no obligation. Compare and choose what is right for you.

How often to pump

Most household tanks need pumping about every three to five years, sooner for small tanks, large households or homes with a garbage disposal. If you do not know when your tank was last pumped, now is a good time. Our septic maintenance schedule explains the warning signs, and the septic cost guide lists typical prices.

What septic pumping costs

As a typical national-guide range, routine septic pumping often runs roughly $300 to $600 for most homes. Larger tanks, buried lids, overdue tanks and after-hours calls cost more. The provider's quote is the only number that counts.

Before you hire anyone

In Alabama, septic pumpers and installers must be licensed by the Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board, which has an online roster search. Repairs and new installations generally need a permit from the county health department, part of the Alabama Department of Public Health. Ask any provider for the license number, a written price, and a written record of the work.
